One Minute Past Five, Main Gate, Portsmouth Dockyard, Friday October 1956

By kind permission of the artist, David Beer

"The dockyard maties, cycled like a colony of ants, past the pubs and pie shops; women pushed prams full of out-work from the naval tailors, and sailors on shore leave, thirsty and lustful cruised the pavements."

"Walking through the dockyard was like entering a walled town populated by a vast number of skilled craftsmen: shipwrights, sailmakers, mastmakers, blacksmiths and carpenters and their labourers. Walking amongst the sailors, maties and and bowler-hatted foremen brought back a host of memories."
